KEEPING THEM OFF THE REEF

Flotilla 13-03 offers boating safety classes from October to April in Big Pine Key. Classes meet twice a week for three weeks. The instructors are trained volunteers from our flotilla. Most Insurance companies recognize this safety training and offer a discount on your boat insurance policy. Check with your agent to confirm.

Classes will be advertised in
newspapers and US1 radio. Sign-up booths will be held at the Winn-Dixie
shopping center in Big Pine Key the week before the start of classes.
The classes
meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Big Pine Key Habitat for Humanity Building

U.S. COASTGUARD AUXILIARY
BIG PINE FLOTILLA 1303
A Boating Skills and Seamanship program will be presented by the US Coastguard Auxiliary Big Pine Flotilla 1303 at the Habitat For Humanity, 30320 Overseas Hwy, Big Pine Key, Fl. Programs begins at 7pm and end at 9:30pm. A knot will be taught each evening. The schedule of programs is as follows:
Monday Oct 27 - Knot 11-14 Overhand, Figure 8
Chapter 2 - EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR BOAT – Requirements for your boat, your boats equipment, legal considerations, boating accidents.
Chapter 6 – RULES YOU MUST FOLLOW – Inland and federal rules, general responsibility, to whom do they apply?
Wednesday Oct 29- Knot 11-23 Bowline, Square
Chapter 4 – BOAT HANDLING – Loading your boat, getting started, docking, mooring, and anchoring.
Chapter 12 – WEATHER AND BOATING – What causes our weather, understanding local weather, fog, frontal action and your personal weather minimums. Working with local weather reports and forecasts.
Monday Nov 3 - Knot 11-18 Clove Hitch
Chapter 5 – YOUR “HIGHWAY” SIGNS – “Aids to Navigation(ATON) – Buoyage system, waterway signs, lights, chart symbols, bridges and navigation publications.
Chapter 9 – CHARTS (PILOTING) – This session will review the charts and symbols for our local and Key West harbor areas.

Chapter 9 – PILOTING – Charts, latitude and longitude, compass errors, positioning, speed, time, distance, dead reckoning. You will also plot several navigation problems on local charts.
